In the Madnoodler's introduction to circuit bending course, participants will learn the basics of circuit bending. Organizational skills and soldering will be demonstrated. Other skills to be developed include pin pointing bends and taking an ordinary keyboard and making it into an opto theremin. Using variations of the "starmate" style keyboard, participants will be urged to explore with photo-resistors and alligator clips to find unique possibilities. After the fun of exploring these versatile keyboards, participants will stabilize and optimize their creation by heat shrinking the connections.

Maybe you're interested in EVP (electronic voice phenomena) and want a good source of white noise. Maybe you're a nervous wreck and need something to drown the world out. Or maybe you feel the need to dance in from of a giant amp that's blasting harsh noise every once in a while! If so, then this is the workshop for you. We'll build a simple noise generator using a handful of resistors, capacitors, and transistors. We'll also talk about the fundamentals of electric circuits, physical and mathematical approaches to noise, and historical perspectives on the electronics industry.

Hands-On Digital Sampler Design and Analysis for Circuitbending Applications

Optional sampler kit available -- (Limited edition designed just for this class!) This class focuses on the fundamental architectures of the digital sampler -- how they work and what happens (technically) when you circuitbend them. I figured the best way to do this would be to design a sampler explicitly for this. In doing so I've tried to design a sampler which lends itself to circuitbending. As many of you know, older toys and instruments often lend themselves better to circuitbending than modern consumer products. The (one sentence) reason for this is the architecture of the circuits -- older chips couldn't do as much as new one can, so they needed more per toy, which essentially presents more "entry points" into the circuit. The sampler I've made (let's call her "Where's The Party At") explicitly brings as many functions out of the central microcontroller as possible -- clocks, addressing, data lines, and analog components are all exposed. This allows a couple things: 1.) It makes the function of the sampler more transparent, and easier for someone learning electronics to understand. 2.) It allows tinkering, as it exposes as many important circuit functions as possible. I'm going to spend the majority of the class talking about how audio gets from a microphone into a sampler and back out, referring to the Where's The Party At as a reference design. We'll look at the schematics, source code, printed circuit board layout, and examine the waveforms of a functioning sampler with an oscilloscope. The goal is to expose the nature of the digital sampler, why it makes the sounds it does, and why circuitbending can make it sound so freaked out. Bring a notebook! Gunung Sari, from the ancient Javanese for “Mountain Essence,” is the Brooklyn-based performance ensemble of Nick Lesley, Stanley Ruiz, and Michael Dotolo. While taking inspiration from Gamelan and other percussion-based folk musics of Southeast Asia (such as Kulintang), their instrumentation is anything but traditional. Circuit-bent electronics, homemade analog synthesizers, remnants of wood and metal are their main tools, in addition to the laptop, which is used both for image and sound processing.

Modeling their performances after the ritual forms played by Balinese “Sekaha” ensembles, from which their name is derived, the band has situated themselves in between New York’s improvisational noise and artified new media communities. Past shows include the annual Bent festival, La Superette at Eyebeam, free103point9’s “Noise!” festival at the Ontological Hysteric Theater, Issue Project Room, Monkey Town, in addition to rock venues in Brooklyn and beyond.

“As a band, we are interested in the similarities and differences regarding the physicality of manipulated circuits and more traditional instruments such as percussion, and using these opposing means in interplay of the intentional and interference. ARK Show - Boston

We played last Saturday at the Ark Show in Boston. It's a video performance night, and we played with two other acts - Qfwfq and Sven Konig.

Qfwfq is an amazing duo! Jackson Pollock meets Merzbow in a Star Wars set. That's how I would describe them - but of course there's more to them than that! One has to experience their performance. Short but sweet set (and noisy!).

We played a good set, with live video feedback. Lofi-ish but cool enough.

We have a demo (?) CD-R available, recorded last year in multiple sessions and locations. The first 7 tracks were recorded live in Nick's Bushwick studio (flight of the buffalo?)...Tracks 8+9 are live recordings of performances.

The title, Selamat Trima Bintang is written in Bahasa Indonesia and translates as "Happily Receive Stars". Other track titles are a mix of Balinese and Indonesian words.

We are also planning to record a new CD (professionally printed - the works!), with an excellent artwork from Matt Hart.

Noise! is a sound performance festival started in 2005. This year free103point9 curates. Each year the "Incubator" program at Ontological Theater hosts a Noise! festival, a three-night multi-arts event designed to promote interest in new forms of sound art. The festival will feature short compositions and performances by established and emerging artists.

Each evening opens with a Radio 4x4 as the audience enters the theater. Radio 4x4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters to radios positioned throughout a performance space. Each radio receives only one of the signals, so that the audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals.

Gunung Sari: Gunung Sari is an experimental electronic noise duo composed of Nick Lesley and Stanley Ruiz, based in Brooklyn, New York. The name means "Mountain's Essence" in Bahasa Indonesia - a tribute to their love of Gamelan music and the ceremonies and rituals that go along with it. Their music is a hybrid of improvised electronics bordering on noise. They use analog electronics, homebrew rudimentary synths, handcrafted wearable noisemakers, hacked radios, and percussions. At times they also do live audio-video processing using the computer.

Bruce McClure: Filmmaker Bruce McClure does some unbelievable things with projectors. Using small perforated metal plates, film loops, specially modified projectors (up to four at a time), and other tinkered bits, McClure creates abstracted Rorschachs of light and dark, Rothko-like patterns and textures, swirling and pulsing shapes and shadows, and other visual phantasmagoria which will please the eye and boggle the brain. His work has been screened at the Whitney Biennial, the London Film Festival, the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and many other venues and festivals around the U.S. and Europe.

BENT Festival 2007

We performed at the BENT fest last April 26, together with Michael Dotolo (our awesome friend from the PIMA program), and D.V. who did live visual manipulation.

Overall it was a great gig! I was (we were!) totally happy how it turned out, as there was very little we did in terms of preparation (I was ill for a week too!). Michael's looped saw playing processed in PD was a welcome addition, and Nick played scrap pieces of wood - totally organic! I guess we took the term "hacking" out of the digital context and applied it in a more physical manner.

Here are some pics - this year's event was held at Eyebeam, which is an Art+Technology institution located in Chelsea.

Frequencies is an experiential and holistic exhibition which captures facets of the DIY community and extends outside the physical bounds of the gallery. It questions the artist-viewer vs. musician-audience relationships, and the cognitive division between visual art and music, gallery and rock venue. The gallery interior has been converted into an experimental music space; and over twenty performances will take place within and outside the gallery throughout the month, further blurring the division between staged performance and living art. These additional venues -- including Goodbye Blue Monday, Cake Shop, Glasslands, free103point9 Project Space, Tonic, The Tank @ Collective:Unconscious, The Tooth, and RavensDen -- will serve both as galleries and as concrete manifestations of the music community.

LA SUPERETTE 2005 included more than 100 artists and attracted thousands of visitors and shoppers.

DIY merchandise has been a part of the music world for years through micro labels and zine culture. Many of these artists act as cultural hackers, re-appropriating history, media, science, and other elements of contemporary life for their work. we played last night at the 3rd Bent Festival which was organized by the cool folks at the Tank. jenny seastern stone joined us to do some video mixing using jitter. it was an amazing show, and we're totally stoked with how the sound and the visuals came together.

other performers last night were daniel cashin, shotaro nakano (cool dude from tokyo), bubblyfish (great set!), and pixelform (thanks for the schematic!).

our noise arsenal included a homebrew analog synth, effects boxes, mixers, bent toy drumsticks (which sounded like a drum machine), custom built oscillator modules, tape players, and live percussion. jenny did the mixing of gamelan video clips from the 30's. during the last segment, the visuals reacted to the volume of the sounds we're generating.

gunung sari was conceived around november 2005, and we played our 1st ever wonderful noise gig last december 10 at the phi phenomena fest - at the lucky cat in williamsburg, brooklyn, new york.

the duo behind this seminal group is nick lesley and stanley ruiz, who are classmates at brooklyn college's performance and interactive media arts graduate program.

nick also plays thunder drums in necking and jazzhandzz, and is now becoming fond of computer music using Max/MSP, while stanley used to play guitars and scream in some ill-fated crust punk bands in manila. sometimes he also makes his own musique concrete on the side, and builds analog electronic musical instruments.

the common denominator here is the duo's love for gamelan music and rituals, hence the name: gunung sari means mountain's essence in bahasa indonesia.
